Flow (formerly UTD Manager)

Where to find it in the menu

The module is located in the Design > Flow section (formerly Management > UTD Manager), with the Processing (formerly Management), Pipelines (formerly Sequenced Pipelines), Forms, Controls import (formerly Qualifications import) and Configuration (formerly Settings > Configuration > UTD Manager) entries. When you hover over a renamed entry, a "Formerly: …" tooltip shows its previous label (in the English interface, the module's former name is displayed as "UTD Manager").

Screenshots

The screenshots on this page reflect the version 2.0.0 interface, except for two of them, which still show the previous interface: the "Nouvelle production" (New production) pop-up (data governance owner(s)) and the "Soumis aux règles de gouvernance" (Subject to governance rules) column of the modules table.

Glossary

TermDefinition
CubeA cube is a multidimensional database in which data is pre-calculated.
Blank environmentThe blank environment is the folder that contains the UTD's development environment.
ModuleA module is a data processing pipeline. It defines the set of executables that will be launched when a production request is made.
VersionA UTD version corresponds to a given state in the evolution of the UTD.
Data Processing Unit (UTD)A Data Processing Unit (abbreviated "UTD") is a grouping of several modules that either share common characteristics (e.g. a single business scope, or the management of all business reference data) or describe a complete business process made up of several flows (for example, consolidating the accounting of several subsidiaries).

Introduction

Flow (formerly UTD Manager) is designed to define and manage the UTDs that will subsequently be produced in Operations > Orchestration > Executions (formerly Data Fabrik > UTD Production).

This management process is built around three main steps:

  1. General definition of the UTD
  2. Definition of the UTD's versions
    1. Management of the blank environment
    2. Management of the catalog
  3. Definition of the module(s) of the UTD version

Governance rule owners

A multi-user selection area has been added to the UTD production creation screen, allowing the owners of the associated data governance to be designated.

  • This area is displayed only if the selected module is subject to governance.
  • Only users with a "Créateur" (Creator) or "super-admin" role in the Data Gouvernance application can be selected.
  • The selection uses a multiselect field with search by last name and first name.
  • If an equivalent production (same UTD and same module) has already been carried out, the previously designated owners are suggested by default.
  • The field remains editable before submission and is not required.

Completing governance rules

A feature allows data governance rules to be completed following a successful UTD production, in cases where the module used is subject to governance.

The ability to complete these rules is reserved to:

  • the user assigned to the production,
  • users with the super-admin role in the Data Gouvernance application.

The interface allows entry of the governance rules specific to the tags produced by the production. Access is conditioned on:

  • a module marked as subject to governance,
  • a successfully completed production,
  • the presence of a user assigned to the production.
info

All other users are excluded from this step, even if they have access to the UTD.

  • increment the version number
  • upload the new blank environment

Statuses and associated actions

A UTD can have 5 distinct statuses:

  • "Brouillon" (Draft)
  • "Annulé" (Cancelled)
  • Prototype
  • "Actif" (Active)
  • "Inactif" (Inactive)

"Brouillon" Status (Draft)

By default, when created, the version has "Brouillon" (Draft) status.

A UTD version with "Brouillon" (Draft) status will not be visible in Operations > Orchestration > Executions.

If the UTD version has "Brouillon" (Draft) status, it can be changed to "Prototype", "Actif" (Active), or "Annulé" (Cancelled) status.

"Prototype" Status

If the UTD version has "Prototype" status, it can be changed to "Brouillon" (Draft), "Actif" (Active), or "Annulé" (Cancelled) status.

A version can only be moved to "Prototype" status if at least one of its modules has "Actif" (Active) status.

info

This status is used when deploying a UTD version on the platform. It allows the version to run in Operations > Orchestration > Executions and permits a return to "Brouillon" (Draft) status if a modification is needed (of the blank environment, for example).

"Actif" Status (Active)

If the UTD version has "Actif" (Active) status, it can be changed to "Inactif" (Inactive) status.

info

Only a version with "Actif" (Active) status can be scheduled recurrently in Operations > Orchestration.

"Annulé" and "Inactif" Statuses (Cancelled and Inactive)

If the version has "Annulé" (Cancelled) or "Inactif" (Inactive) status, no status change is allowed.

What's new in 2.0.0

New in 2.0.0

The sections below describe features introduced in version 2.0.0, based on their functional criteria. The exact navigation details and screenshots will be completed once the version is released.

Sequenced UTD

Sequenced UTD replaces the "Processus" concept with a more readable model: a UTD's modules run in an explicit, configurable sequence rather than an implicit chain.

  • The sequence is configured visually, with dependencies between steps.
  • Existing Processus continue to work unchanged during a transition period.
  • The sequence's execution can be viewed and monitored in real time.

A migration guide is planned to help move an existing Processus to a Sequenced UTD.

Pipelines are managed from the Design > Flow > Pipelines menu (formerly Sequenced Pipelines).

Pipelines: search across all categories

The Design > Flow > Pipelines screen has a Search… box below the "Select a category" title, above the category tiles. It lets you find a pipeline without knowing which category it belongs to, as on the Processing screen.

Pipelines screen: "Recherche…" (Search) box below "Sélectionnez une catégorie" (Select a category), above the category tiles

  1. Type some text in the search box: the category tiles are replaced by the list of matching pipelines, across all categories, including those in the "Uncategorized" group. The search looks at the pipelines' label and description and is not case-sensitive.

  2. Each result shows the pipeline label, its version (for example "v1.0.0", because several versions of the same pipeline share the same label), its status as a colored dot and its category.

Results of the "test horaire" search: two pipelines with their status dot, version and "Uncategorized" category

  3. Clicking a result opens the pipeline's category and shows its details on the right. If the pipeline's category is inactive, it does not appear among the tiles: only the pipeline details open.

Details of the selected pipeline on the right, with the "Uncategorized" category open on the left

  4. Clearing the search box (cross on the right of the field) brings the category tiles back. If no pipeline matches, the "No results." message is displayed.

Once a category is open, the search box specific to that category remains available and only filters the pipelines of the current category.

Workspace: navigation by category

A new Workspace entry (Operations > Orchestration > Workspace) offers visual navigation through the UTD catalog, organized by business category (for example Finance, HR, Quality, Reporting):

  1. The categories screen shows one tile per category, with the number of UTDs in it.
  2. Clicking a category opens the list of UTDs in it, with their status and last run date.
  3. Clicking a UTD redirects to the Operations > Orchestration > Executions screen, with the grid already filtered on that UTD.

This navigation is designed to let you find a UTD by its business domain without knowing its technical name.

Qualification results stored in the database and exposed via API

Qualification results produced by UTDs (blocking checks, quality indicators) are no longer only available as an Excel file: they are now stored in the database.

  • Qualification results can be viewed by UTD, by run, or by period, directly in Orkestra.
  • The full history is kept (traceability of qualifications over time).
  • Results are accessible via an API, so they can be used in an external reporting tool (for example Power BI).

Targeting a module to compatible workers

A UTD module may require specific technologies or tools to run correctly. Orkestra can now check that the worker chosen to run a module actually has the prerequisites declared for it.

  • The technologies available on each worker are declared (automatically when the worker connects, or manually).
  • If no compatible worker is available when a scheduled UTD is triggered, an alert is raised instead of letting the run fail.
  • It remains possible to force a module to run on a specific worker.
